I can’t believe how quickly time seems to fly! Maddie’s 6th week of life was quite a big one:

Maddie went to her first Cardinals game on Saturday, May 17. The Cards played the Tampa Bay Rays. Theybrought home a winner in extra innings! This was a special day for Mommy and Daddy to share something we love to do with our daughter. She did very good at the game as well as at the party afterwards… she didn’t like to leave the party to go to bed but her Mommy didn’t either so I can’t blame her!

At home, Maddie has made some big strides. Two days in a row (and I hope I don’t jinx myself by saying this) Maddie has slept more than 8 hours at a time at night!!! We need to work on the time frame but its generally from 8pm to around 4 am. We do a quick feeding and both days she went back down until almost 9am!! Mommy is VERY excited about this.

During Tummy time, she is also doing something very interesting… scooting! While kicking like crazy Maddie has learn to rotate herself 90 degrees as well as scoot when she really pumps her legs. She has very strong, active legs.

She is still struggling to find her thumb. She can only get it 1 out of about 30 times and its really frustrating her! She is focusing really hard but just hasn’t happened yet. Mommy and Daddy are really rooting for her and hopefully this week will be victorious.

Maddie had her 1 month doctor’s visit today with Dr. LaBarge. She is doing very well. She now weighs 8 lbs 7 oz and is 20 1/2 inches long! She is still only in the 25% for height and weight but doing well since she is growing. Her neck is getting really strong, her development is on track and she is really good with following you with her eyes. We are very excited and proud of her.

She did have to get a shot today (part 2 of Hep B) which was very traumatic for Mommy but Maddie took it like a trooper, only crying for a few minutes. I am nervous about the 2 month visit as I know this is when she will get “many” shots… Mom will be bringing moral support for this one. For now, all is well at the Hobin house!

(Newer pictures will be posted soon we promise!)

She sleeps and eats a lot - however Tanner and I never get to sleep or eat… hmmm. Tanner went back to work and Mommy and Maddie are working on trying to get some sort of routine in place (which hasn’t happened yet). She is a very happy baby but also lets us know when she doesn’t like something! We haven’t been out too much but we try to go on daily walks around the neighborhood when the weather is nice and we like to visit Nana and Grandpa’s house.

Madeline Grace Hobin was born on April 1st 2008 at 3:32 pm via c-section. The Dr. told Tanner to stand up, look over the curtain and announce the birth. After moving the umbilical cord out of the way all I heard was “Its a girl” and then a big yell! YEAH!!! Maddie was out and healthy! We were so excited we were both crying and in complete shock! The nurse took Daddy with the baby to get weighed and get pictures. I still needed to be put back together. Tanner walked in with Maddie in his arms to meet me. It was the most special moment of our lives. She weighed 6 lb 6 oz and was 19 3/4 inches long. She was healthy and beautiful. Time to go share the news!!

Everything was moving along great. Almost too great! This is of course where reality was about to set in. At 11:30 am I wasn’t progressing past 7 cm so they decided to break my water. This was exciting as we were hoping this would get the ball rolling again. We knew epidurals could slow labor but stopping it wasn’t going to help us deliver the baby! Well, everything started going downhill from here… once they broke my water they realized there was meconium in the waters when they broke it. This meant NICU was going to be in the room for delivery. At 12:20 after no progression they put me on potosin. I was ok with this but it wasn’t great. At 12:38 I began spiking a fever (99.7) which concerned the staff. Again, not a panic moment but not great. The baby was starting to get “tired” from labor and started having fetal distress every time I contracted (basically the heart rate dropped dramatically with each contraction). I then went to internal monitoring and put on O2. It was started to not look good for both mom and baby. at 1:30 I was taken off the potosin as the risks to the baby were becoming too great. The emotional decision was made that we would be having a c-section to get the baby out and quick. This was very scary and emotional for both Tanner and I. They very quickly drugged me up and took me in for surgery. We were very scared but knew we were in good hands. Right before we went into surgery we got a huge surprise… Tanner’s sister CC flew in to St. Louis on a whim for the birth. She got to see us before we went in and gave us comforting words.

So nothing happened all day on Monday to we were convinced we were just going to be induced on Tuesday as planned. We went to the Dr. on Monday for our scheduled appointment and some good news… the contractions helped me get to 2 cm dialated! This was the first good news all day once the contraction stopped. Patty and Larry got to St. Louis and we had them over for dinner (Helen Fitzgerald’s pizza, salad and toasted ravioli). They left around 10:00 pm for the night to get some sleep as tomorrow’s induction would be a big day. Around 10:3o pm the contractions started again… seriously?!? 10:30pm?!? We were so tired from being up the entire night before with contractions all we wanted to do was sleep! Well, that wasn’t in the cards. In a matter of a couple of hours contractions went from 20 minutes apart to 3 minutes apart consistently…it was time to go! Tanner and I showered and left for the hospital at 3:00 am. We arrived at St. John’s right around 3:30 am. We were put into woman’s eval as labor and delivery was full! We got checked and I was still 2 cm dialated but they said it was time! We were in a lot of pain but very excited that everything was happening naturally without the induction! We called our parents on our way to the hospital. Don and Nancy were there 10 minutes after we arrived and we told Patty and Larry to get more sleep and we would call them in a few hours once things progressed! At 4:30 we got moved over to our labor and delivery room. Contractions were very strong and uncomfortable. At 6:30 am we were at 4 cm!! The big 4 meant Epidural time!! At 7:25 I was given the epidural and thought my whole life had changed. Life was good. No pain and baby was progressing! At 9:19 we were 7 cm , 100 effaced and -2! Holy cow things were moving fast. The nurse was convinced we would have the baby by noon! I couldn’t believe it.

Sunday, March 31 around 10:30 pm initial contractions started. Around 2am they started becoming consistent 8 minutes apart. We were up all night thinking it was about time!! Around 9:30 am we talked to the Dr. and explained that we were still consistently contracting every 8 minutes. She too was confident that things were going to happen today! The Dr. told us to take a walk to help progress the contractions as we weren’t suppose to go to the hospital until they were 5 minutes apart consistently. Tanner and I went for our walk around the neighborhood talking about how we thought the labor would play out. We got back to the house and nothing…. the contractions stopped. Literally… no contractions. The walk stopped labor! This was frustrating. Needless to say, we walked 2 more times to try to re-start contractions… the baby though he/she was ready but the exercise scared her back in! So we sat and waited! The grandparents-to-be were eagerly awaiting a call to get to the hospital. Patty and Larry none-the-less started their drive from Wisconsin to St. Louis for the big event.

So our little bundle of joy seems to be a bit reluctant to join us at the moment!! Instead of heading south in order to want to come out he/she has crept back up under my rib cage! Thus, at our doctors appointment yesterday we set an induction date in case the baby doesn’t decide to come out first (We are still hoping we go naturally!!). We are set to get a phone call from St. John’s on April 1st anytime after 8pm. Our job is to sit and wait by the phone until a bed is ready for us. This means we will welcome our new little one into the world hopefully no later than April 2nd! More news to come…

As we axiously await the arrival of our newest family member we were hoping for some good news… no such luck! Nothing bad mind you, just hoping for dialation or indication the baby is ready to join us in the world. Nothing yet! If nothing happens this week we are going to start discussing induction next week.

Tanner and I are ready to be parents… come out little one! We also want to share with the world if you are a boy or girl?! There is a lot of speculation but a very divided crowd!
